User Guide:

FaceFinish implements an intuitive GUI with a few user selectable items. Upon launching the application, the user is presented with the option of either selecting a photo stored in the iPhone Photo Album or taking a new photo from within the application using the iPhone camera.

Select "Pick Photo" or "Take Photo" from the main screen, which is shown below:

After loading an image into the main screen, press the “Beautify” button to improve the photo’s faces. Note how the Beautify button switches its label to “Undo” upon being pressed. With this button you can toggle back-and-forth between the original image and the beautified image. This helps you to easily see the improvements in the beautified image. Zooming also helps with seeing the details of the improvements. At any time you can use the touch screen to zoom and pan the image. You can also double-press to zoom; zooming will be centered around the location of the double-press. Double-pressing a second time completely zooms the image out.

After beautifying the image you can save it to the iPhone Camera Roll, email it, or upload it to Facebook. Simply press the “Save” button on the main screen to activate a slide-up menu containing these various options (see image below). A few items to note about saving:
  • If the original image is currently displayed that is what will be saved. Similarly, if the beautified image is displayed then that image will be saved.
  • After an image is saved and/or exists in the Camera Roll, the “Save to Camera Roll” button will deactivate and gray out. This serves as a reminder that the currently displayed image already exists in the Camera Roll.
  • Existing photos are never replaced or modified – saving a displayed image always creates a new photo in the Camera Roll.
  • Photos uploaded to Facebook will appear in the Album titled FotoApps

The user selectable items can be found on the “Settings” screen, shown below:
Lite Version
Pro Version

  • Beauty Level: This determines the degree to which faces are modified. For example, at Level 1 only minor facial imperfections are reduced, but at Level 3 larger imperfections appear reduced. If the beautified image is currently showing in the main screen, then changing the Beauty Level and returning to the main screen from the Settings screen will cause the photo to be immediately processed at the new Level.

  • Auto-Zoom to Face: When this is on, the photo preview window within the main screen will automatically zoom and pan to the largest face in the image after applying beautification. This helps to better see the modifications made to faces in the photo.

  • Prompt to Save: When this is on, the user always will be presented with a dialogue box prompting the user to save the beautified image whenever the user navigates away from the main screen (which would result in loosing the image). This happens when “picking” or “taking” a new photo.

  • Real-Time Instruction: When this is on, green text bubbles containing user instructions will automatically guide you in the three-step process from loading, to enhancing, and finally saving a photo.

  • The “Read about Pro version” button in the Lite Settings screen takes you to the App Store product page for FaceFinish Pro. From here you can read about Pro and also buy it.

The Pro version adds additional Settings:

  • Contrast Adjustment: This modifies the image to reveal greater detail in challenging lighting conditions. The LoLight setting is for generally dark images. The HiLight setting is better when there are both bright and overly dark areas within the image. There is also a setting which blends the two modifications. While this adjustment may improve your photo, it is not a substitute for better lighting.

  • Saved Image Size: This setting applies to the beautified photo when saving it and emailing it. The setting also applies to the original photo when emailing it. When set to “1 MP” the photo will be saved at a maximum resolution of 1 mega-pixel (MP). Alternatively, when set to “Full” the beautified photo will be saved at its original resolution. Note that photos uploaded to Facebook are always limited to a maximum resolution of 600x400 pixels.

  • Icon Imprint: When set to “On”, the saved beautified image will have the FaceFinish icon placed in its lower-right-hand corner. When set to “Off” no imprint is made.

    For best results:
  • Faces should be captured in good lighting conditions (very important)
  • Faces should be captured at a reasonably close range to the camera
  • Faces should be evenly illuminated
  • Faces should be completely captured (not cut-off or obstructed)
  • Faces should be looking directly at (or at least toward) the camera
  • Hold the camera steady when taking a new photo

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Q: What image resolution is used when saving a beautified image?
A: In FaceFinish Lite beautified images are saved at a maximum resolution of 1MP. FaceFinish Pro will save images in their original full resolution, but there is the option to limit resolution to 1MP.

Q: Is there any way to exclude the FaceFinish icon imprint in the bottom-right of the beautified image?
A: In the Lite version this is not user selectable. FaceFinish Pro adds the option of removing the icon imprint from the saved image.

Q: Can I save the original image captured within the application to the iPhone Photo Album?
A: Yes. When you press the “Save” button the image currently displayed in the main screen will be saved to the Photo Album. This is true whether it is the original image or the beautified image.

Q: What should I do if the application freezes or crashes?
A: Extra effort has been put into making FaceFinish a stable application. In the event it freezes or crashes, simply reboot the iPhone to restore stability. To reboot: 1) hold down the button on the top-right of the iPhone until you are prompted with the arrow to “slide to power off”, 2) slide the arrow to the right to shut off the phone, 3) wait for iPhone to power down, 4) restart the iPhone by holding down the same button until it starts to turn on.

Q: What should I do if photos won’t save to the Photo Album?
A: This is related with memory issues on the iPhone. Simply reboot your phone and this should fix the problem. The answer immediately above describes the reboot process.

Q: Can I sell the pictures that I process with FaceFinish?
A: Yes, you can sell pictures processed with FaceFinish provided that you have the right to sell the pre-processed pictures.

Q: Can I use FaceFinish on photos transferred to my iPhone that are high resolution?
A: Currently FaceFinish is limited to processing images no larger than 3MP, the resolution of photos captured by the iPhone 3GS.
